I don’t know how many people out there have ever tried a VoIP service but this GRLT member did and was very impressed! Not only did I get a clear call, I also got a better connection than I usually get with a cell phone all over my WiFi connection.
I have been looking for a cheap way to make phone calls because I know people all over the country. I have two cell phones and can't live without either of them. Some people have this network, the others have that. Luckily for me, I seem to only know people who have one or the other so I really do get the best use out of my in-network calling.
The VoIP I chose to use is called Skype. Its a little program that is free to download. If you have Skype, and another friend has Skype as well, the call is free. If however your like me, and most of your friends don’t sit at the computer all of the time, that’s ok as well. Skype has a feature called SkypeOut so that you may call any phone line. It doesn’t matter if it’s a cell phone or a traditional line. If you sign up right now with SkypeOut all of your calls within the US and Canada are FREE until the end of this year! At Wal-Mart I bought the US Robotics Skype Phone (pictured above in silver) for about $40. Hooking it all up and running the program was easy and took all of 30 seconds. I went on the website and bought myself 7 HOURS of talk time for $10!! Not that I needed to buy the talk time, I could have just as easily used the phone only to talk to those friends of mine who have Skype, and it would have been free.Skype has many features along with Voice Mail, and can be personalized to each individual person's taste! Some features do require you to pay but if you get a Skype package then you should be set. Skype isn’t only for home use either; you can buy Skype for your business as well! One last thing I would like to mention. Skype says to use their phone with a broadband connection. I however hooked this up on my laptop and used the phone over my WiFi connection; there wasn’t a change in quality at all! The call was still clear on both ends just as if I was directly plugged into the router. Brandon Langston
