I got wind of this and had to check it out myself. Western Union stops telegram service.
"Effective January 27, 2006, Western Union will discontinue all Telegram and Commercial Messaging services. We regret any inconvenience this may cause you, and we thank you for your loyal patronage." Quoting Western Union. The company was formed in 1855 to offer telegraph services. The announcement was made on the internet. The irony in the announcement is the internet is what made the telegraph even more obsolete than it already was, we had telephones, facsimiles, and overnight shipping, but now in 2006 the telegraph finally admits defeat to the internet.
