I wanted to come here tonight and write some smarmy review of the movie Transformers, but I can't. Transformers was a great movie and this will be one of the few movies I watch more than once in the theaters. Normally I'll watch a movie once and if I liked it I'll watch it again as a home video or a rental.
Yes the movie is one huge General Motors ad, but that's OK because the movie while overstuffed with product placement will hold your attention elsewhere. Besides there is one Toyota Prius, a Dodge Charger Police Interceptor, and plenty of placements for Yahoo! and EBay. There was so much action in this movie they were only able to give you time to catch half a breath. The comedy was well done and the love story didn't ruin the movie. In many movies teams try to put in a love story where it isn't necessary actually can kill their movie. This one approached that point a few times early on but once the action kicked in the love story fell in line and helped add to the story instead of being one of those awkward "please make-it-stop!" young love stories. The new Camaro looks nice. I don't know how I feel about it though, the last Camaro looked nice too, but looks don't make it clean or even fast (it does look fast though). Maybe this vehicle will attract a few people who would have otherwise bought a heavy duty truck and used the vehicle for single person commutes. The Chevy Volt has the similar styling to this vehicle, and that means not all clean cars have to look like the Toyota Prius or the Honda Civic Hybrid. Hopefully GM will actually build the Volt. GM claims they are waiting on a wonder battery; the GM EV1 could do 100 miles per charge with lead acid or NiMH batteries, more than double the Volt's desired range. I personally feel with Lithium Ion batteries and efficient motors this car could be built today, but maybe GM won't build it until its in a certain price bracket (no not just affordable, but I'm thinking they're crazy low-balling, like $20k). Anyway back to the movie, I was a bit young when the Transformers cartoon was out and I don't remember much of it; the transformers I watched were the ones that did the animals. My friend grew up with the original and he said the movie took him back, I could see all of the ideology that was preached in my version of transformers. Happy Fourth of July!
