Will New Yorkers soon be fined for crossing the street while listening to iPods? If one senator's bill is passed, that is certainly going to be the case!
Apparently a Senator in New York wants to ban listening to iPods and other devices like cell phones while crossing city streets.
Now waite just a second. How are people suposed to conduct business and keep in touch with others while also doing other things if this comes to be? I can understand not wanting people to do such things while driving, your in controle of a massive car that can cause damage and death to others. This I think pushes the envelope just a bit to far however. What if earrings suddently (just for the sake of argument) become long and flashy. Does that mean that in NY you are not going to be able to wear them if they cause the sun to reflect to brightly and thus blind passerbys?! What about those people who are out exercising? Does this mean that if you want to listen to music or talk on your cell phone you are going to have to be in a seated state and unable to move? That seems counter to the whole idea of having a cell phone or iPod. NY has a lot more to worrie about than cell phone and iPod use while crossing the street. Senator Kruger went on to later state that "iPod oblivion,.. We're talking about people walking sort of tuned in, in the process of being tuned in, [but] tuned out. Tuned out to the world around them, so they're walking into speeding cars, they're walking into buses, they're walking into one another," If Senator Kruger is so worried about people walking into so many things, maybe he should get out there and teach some walking classes. I can see it now, offered at ever major university and community college in New York, "How to walk in the digital age". When will the new signs go up that say "No skateboarding, bicycleing, talking on your cell phone or listening to an iPod while crossing the street"? I would love to see a picture! Brandon M. | I just read an article that stated that this bill has basically no support and that Senator Kruger really DOES want people to sit down to listen to their iPods....dude, is that not what stereos are for?! And I quote Senator Kruger "If you want to listen to your iPod, sit down and listen to it," Ehhh I think I'll pass thanks. Wouldn't we all look funny every time we came to a crosswalk pulling our headphones off and holding our cell phones away from us every time we crossed a street? |
