This list contains all the voice commands that I know, for the Toyota Voice Activated Navigation systems. Not all commands work on every vehicle, this article covers Toyota, Lexus and Scion, vehicles equipped with voice activation but it will also work on some GM voice navigation systems. I want to thank Rick Johnson for making the original list and inspiring me to make this one. There will be an Excel 2007 attached if you just want a listing of all the commands.

I have tried these commands on the following vehicles, model years ranging from 2003-2008:

Vehicle:

Toyota:

4Runner

Avalon

Camry

Camry Hybrid

Camry Solara

Dealer installed Toyota/Denso in-dash Voice activated Navigation Audio System with DVD player and tilt-down screen

Highlander

Highlander Hybrid

Land Cruiser

Prius

Sienna

Solara

Tundra

Lexus:

Dealer installed Toyota/Denso in-dash Voice activated Navigation Audio System with DVD player and tilt-down screen

ES series

IS250

RX series

Scion:

Dealer installed Toyota/Denso in-dash Voice activated Navigation Audio System with DVD player and tilt-down screen

Not tested on: green Pioneer Special Edition xB

We will start with the voice command basics.

To use the voice command feature press the Voice Command  (VC) button, then  wait for the beep and the microphone icon, (on newer models that still have instructions turned on wait for the computer to stop talking) and speak the command desired command.  This is the same procedure for answering the system's questions, after the computer finishes giving the options, press VC button, wait for beep/icon, then say your command.

Many of the commands have alternate commands for ease of use; and to accommodate a larger range of English accents; I have met a handful of individuals whose vehicles refused to recognize them because of their accent. I will point out the alternate commands as we come to them.  For commands like "xyz up" or "xyz down" instead of listing each as a separate command, I will list them as "Up/Down"

To get the abbreviated list of commands for the screen you are on now, press the voice command button and say "Help", "Command Help", "Command List" or, "What can I say", this only works after "I agree" is pressed on in the navigation mode.   If you accidentally press the voice command button, say "Cancel" you can also say cancel to close a window on the Multi Function Display (MFD) that has a cancel button.

Climate Control Commands:

Saying "Automatic Air Conditioning" will toggle the Auto A/C or "Automatic Air Conditioning On/Off" will put the Auto A/C in the power state you requested.

Adjusting the Automatic Air Conditioner's Set Temperature:
Using these commands will not change the status of the A/C button on the climate screen if the "Auto A/C" light on the dash is lit.  This light indicates whether the car will use the A/C compressor to help control the interior temperature.

Saying "Raise/ Lower Temperature" or "Warmer1/Cooler" will adjust the automatic air conditioner's set temperature by two degrees.

You can also pick a temperature between 65 and 85 and have the car set to that. Say "X degrees2" or "Temperature X degrees" where X is the temperature between 65 and 85 you want.  You can also use this command as a shortcut to max hot/cold.  ("Set temperature X degrees is an invalid command I've seen hundreds of people try it and it has only worked twice.)

There is no voice command for max hot/cold. But once you've picked 65/85 you are one degree away from a maximum, just use your steering wheel control, your climate screen, or the "raise/lower temperature" voice command.  Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) equipped vehicles will generally start their engine at a max temperature will not turn it off until you adjust the temperature. (If the vehicle is in ready mode)

Multi Function Display Commands:

Saying "Screen Off/On3"will cause the screen to power off or on.  Pressing a button on the steering wheel, on the edge of the MFD, or audio system will turn it back on, commands like volume and temperature will only temporarily turn the screen back on, commands from the screen and commands like map, info, etc. will turn the screen back on permanently

Audio System:

Saying "Audio" or "Audio On/Off" will Toggle the power to the audio system.

Tuners

Saying "Radio" will turn on the radio. Saying "AM/FM (or FM1)/FM2" will turn the radio on and switch to the selected band.  If you have properly installed satellite radio, you can also say, "Satellite Radio" or to select a satellite preset group you can say "Satellite 1/2/3" or "SAT 1/2/3".

"Type Up/Down" will seek up or down through different types of music.

Media:

You can also say "CD", "DVD", "Cassette" (or "Tape" or "Cassette tape"), "CD Changer" or "DVD changer" depending on your equipment.  The system will not recognize commands for equipment not installed or not installed properly.

You can say "Reverse" or "Program" to change sides of a tape.

Here is a list of self-explanatory commands:

"Next/Previous track" (or "Track up/down") [some tapes support this], "Skip backward", "Rewind", "Fast Forward", "Next/Previous Disk" (or "Disk Up/Down") and "Play".

Universal:

"Seek Up/Down" "Rewind"

Answering the system's questions:

Occasionally the system will ask you questions, to make sure it does what you asked properly, here are some of the answers you can give, don't forget to push the VC button before responding.  "Yes/No", "Enter Destination", "Add to/Replace Destination".  The system usually asks these questions when you are navigating by voice.

Guidance System

Guidance and Map modes

If you need the system to repeat something it said, press the VC button and say, "Repeat" or "Repeat Voice" or "Repeat Guidance".  If you are under guidance and you need an instruction repeated you can also press the map button (twice if not on the map, or once if on the map) and the system will repeat what it was saying.

If the volume of the computer's voice is too high or low you can say, "Louder/Softer", these commands will go through the different volume levels 0-7 found under Menu > Volume on the display.

When on the route selection screen you can say "Quick" or "Quick 1/2" or "Short" to pick one of the three available paths to your destination.

You can say "Quick access 1/2/3/4/5" or "Go to Quick access 1/2/3/4/5" or "Go to Quick access number 1/2/3/4/5" or "Quick access number 1/2/3/4/5" to go to one of your preset locations. You can say, "Home", "Go Home", or "Go to Home" to go to your preset home location.

Tip:

Do not set this as your exact address because if someone steals your car, you do not want to lead the thief to the rest of your valuables or more importantly, put your family in danger. Set this as a location near your home that you are familiar with, like the entrance to your neighborhood, so when navigating from an unfamiliar location to your home a several keystrokes or a few voice commands are all that you need."

Points Of Interest (POIs)

Here is a list of all of the different types of POIs the system can display in map mode.  For example if I was in an urban area and felt unsure of I wanted to eat, I could press the VC button and say, "I'm Hungry" and look at the types of restaurants nearby.  To clear the POI icons from the Map you can say, "POI off", or "POI".

I will continue to update this list with anything I find later, or if any readers submit their findings.  Look for the update notifications on the home page.

If you know of any commands that have worked for you, that are not listed, please let us know.  We'll need: the command, model year and model of your vehicle so we can make this list more comprehensive.

1: This command doesn't work with my accent.
2:I have to say temperature x with my accent.
3: Screen On rarely works for me.
