"That car is too small!" Print E-mail

"That little car can't hold enough stuff for me to drive to and from work every day." I hear this comment all the time about the Prius hatchback. I counter with this photo gallery after the jump.

The Prius performed admirably on this trip.  I drove about ten mph faster than I like to go on the freeway most of the trip with a larger load than the one pictured, my brother and myself to  Columbia, SC; we ended  the trip with two gallons left in the tank and an average fuel economy of 47.5.  I achieve similar rates while speeding empty on the freeway so I am going say that the extra tonnage did not put much of a dent my mileage for this trip traveling 10mph faster than we did with an empty Prius yields the same MPG.

On the start of the trip, we saw quite a few Toyota built hybrids; a white RX 400h, a large number of Prius, and one classic Prius.  We also saw one or two of the last generation Civic hybrid and two or three of the current Civic hybrid, possibly a Saturn Vue Green Line and possibly a Saturn Aura Green Line.  The Green Lines are still difficult for me to spot because I have not seen enough to tell them apart from the standard model other than the badges.  The only hybrid going our direction the whole trip was a red Prius being driven at my favorite freeway speed of ~65mph in South Carolina, we would have hung out for a bit but I was on a mission and there was no time to hang out at that speed.

The only parts about the handling that seemed different were braking and cornering at speed (think off ramps with speed limits of 25mph)

Seriously... it's a four/five passenger car with a hatchback. How much does the average person need to carry to work on a daily basis?

Five people with briefcases and xerox box full of cupcakes would fit easily. Unless the people you talk to are electricians or something, how much cargo space do they need?

@DARKMAGE I like that
...and a xerox box full of cupcakes...

When I ask these people what would be an appropriate size for a vehicle or how much stuff they need they get a bit silent. If they're still talkative I ask them if the Camry would be big enough. Some of them say yes! smilies/cheesy.gif The Prius is maybe a cubic foot or two smaller than the Camry and as this demo showed actually has more usable space.
