Dayton Daily News reports :The top auto companies all got together train upcoming technicians. entire article quotedThat's why, in a rare show of collaboration, four of the world's biggest car makers — Toyota, Honda, Ford and GM — have sent their top experts on hybrid technology to Sinclair Community College this week to provide intensive training sessions for automotive educators. "This has never happened before," said Rex Kent, the Sinclair assistant professor who organized the summer institute. "Not only will (the competing auto experts) be in the same building together, they'll be doing hands-on training and talking about their new products." Forty hand-picked educators from technical colleges in 24 states and New Zealand will attend the Advanced Automotive Hybrid Technology Institute. A grant from the National Science Foundation will provide a $100-a-day stipend plus lodging for each. Car makers are donating their experts' time, Kent said. The idea is to "train the trainers," who will finish the week certified to train other technicians to service hybrid technology, Kent said. In addition, Toyota will provide hybrid cars for the educators to test drive while they're here. Sales of hybrid vehicles have nearly doubled every year since their introduction in 1999, reaching 206,000 in 2005. However, they still account for only 1.2 percent of the American auto market.
