I don't understand why Texas is constantly beating us to the punch with ways to encourage fuel conservation. They already have synchronized traffic lights and their governments did it to save time during rush hour rather than to save fuel but, less stops also means less fuel consumption. Synchronizing traffic lights is when the local transportation authority sets the traffic lights to a more efficient timing, the lights also communicate with each other increasing the efficiency of the system and giving the name synchronized. Anyway what brought this up is... Star-Telegram reports: (7/15)
Our transportation system in Gainesville doesn't include rail or metro but we do have a bus system, when I do ride the bus they are often under capacity. I don't ride our bus system as often as I could because it is so inefficient. Anytime I want to go anywhere by bus involves a minimum of three bus lines. The lines run at different intervals and there aren't enough destinations. I always find it quicker to take my bike or my car to where I want to go than to use the bus system. Aside from the routing issues, when I'm biking or riding I can't help but to notice the large plumes of black smoke pouring from the tailpipes of our less than half-full buses. Now I'm not advocating we get rid of the bus system, just that we go back to the drawing board and focus on efficient routes and timing, proper maintenance of our city fleet and maybe if funding allows we could get a few alternative fuel or hybrid buses. What are some ways we can improve our fuel economies and what can we do to help out our neighbors? (Talk Back) Kacey Green
