LA Times reports: 7/6After hearing about Al Gore III and the speeding Prius, and with Race Night 3 still fresh in his mind; My brother wasn't taking any chances riding with me.As yet another tale of celebrity spawn gone wild, the arrest Wednesday of Albert Gore III - son of the former vice president - on suspicion of drug possession was routine except for one rather mind-blowing detail: Gore was clocked in a blue Toyota Prius hybrid traveling on the southbound 5 Freeway in Orange County in excess of 100 mph. "One hundred and five, actually," said Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino. The media is finally starting to realise that the Prius isn't as poky as they make it out to be. In fact the updated title to the linked article is "Who says the Prius can't get out of its own way?" I've said it before these kinds of misconceptions are why I race the Prius. This vehicle is very capable, the only reason I don't drive more agressively is because I can't afford to (lives are priceless, and gas is expensive too).
The Prius has one of the lowest coefficients of drag of any current production car so at high speeds the smaller weaker power-train can still keep up because it is combating way less air resistance. The land speed Prius was clocked at 130.4 MPH on the salt flats, the production Prius are governed between 105-108 depending on model year and country of purchase. I can't tell you what mine is set to because I ran out of track at 104 MPH. Trackback(0)
