The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is partnering with the ports of Long Beach, Calif., and Los Angeles to develop and test hybrid technology cargo handling equipment known as yard hostlers. The new equipment is estimated to reduce air emissions by 93 percent, according to the EPA. The two-year project will cost $1.2 million. The EPA will contribute $300,000, the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles each will contribute $375,000, and the Long Beach Container Terminal will contribute $150,000. The project will test hybrid technology, which combines a clean source of power with a clean diesel engine for dramatic emission reductions. "If this promising technology proves viable, we will see air quality improvements beyond anything currently required by state or federal regulations," said Geraldine Knatz, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles. Three hybrid yard hostlers will be operated and tested for six months at the Long Beach Container terminal. The hybrid vehicles would use either a hybrid-electric system or a hybrid-hydraulic system, which would use hydraulic fluid compression to store energy. 

Don't forget that hydraulic hybrids use a fluid such as nitrogen, not oil like a hydraulic braking system.  The best way to describe a hydraulic hybrid to those who don't know what they are is to explain it as a pneumatic hybrid, then explain the common name for the systems are hydraulic hybrid.
