The Windows Vista Ultimate Extras team has finally broken their four month silence over at their blog. Barry Goffe, the Director of the Windows Vista Ultimate team appologised to their loyal customers.

What are ultimate extras?
Before Windows Vista launched, Microsoft promised that the most feature packed SKU of Windows Vista would be regularly enhanced with features available only to customers with the Ultimate Edition.
All of the currently available Ultimate Extras except the Dream Scene content pack launched on January 30th with the operating system.

Thoughts:
The last time we heard from the Ultimate Extras team was on March 13th. I don't think most of the fans/customers are upset about the lack of new extras, but rather the lack of communication from the team before yesterday. Microsoft was targeting the enthusiast with this feature and enthusiasts don't expect complete silence from a developer after they start a public blog. A few minor status updates like yesterdays over the past few months would have helped avoid some of the current bitterness.

Barry says that quality is the main reason for the holdup, I don't mind waiting for a stable product. Right now Dream Scene preview eats up all of my available resources on two systems, one desktop with a decent graphics card and one laptop. Dream Scene doesn't quite handle resuming from sleep properly it also doesn't always come back after I exit Beyond TV (my PVR software), and on numerous occasions my desktop will crash Dream Scene and I'll be left with a black desktop, these issues were enough for me to decide to wait for the final version. The preview version is good enough to show off when people ask what good is a moving desktop; I fire it up and show them.
Until more extras are available unless someone is an enthusiast or that want to have the most complete version of windows I'll have to recommend that they purchase either Home Premium edition or Business Edition. If Windows XP suits a person's needs I won't necessarily recommend they upgrade, but I'm against installing XP on new machines. (Just ask my coworkers). I've been satisfied with my experience with Windows Vista from the beta versions up through today. I've only had one blue screen on production code and my only real complaint was how major vendors like: Creative, Nvidia, and HP took so long to get Vista support with such a long lead time. Smaller companies like Snapstream ran circles around them.

Barry has started the team in the right direction with regards to satisfying the enthusiasts, just keep open lines of communication. I'm personally looking forward to the final version of Microsoft Group Shot. So I'll give the team four more weeks benefit of a doubt to see if they can continue to keep open lines of communication with us. Oh and use those blogs on that site team, why have individual blogs if nobody writes to them? On this site I shut down the team member blogs because we have a hard enough time getting content on the main page without trying to fill a few side blogs.

I hope they don't ruin (by letting it turn to abandonware) the Ultimate Extras program, over the projected life for Windows Vista there is plenty of time for this group to shine.

The other good thing about this is, if the team gets their act together, the Anytime Upgrade program will allow anyone to upgrade to experience any new must have Ultimate Extras if they surface.
