What have I been up to this past week? Print E-mail

First, I recovered this site three times due to errors that later turned out to be a simple text file (more on that later) then I upgraded most of the software the site runs on and added some new categories and menus.  By the way check out the new RSS feed here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/grlt .  You will need to switch to the new feed before I upgrade the feed system because I have not decided what to do with the old feed at that point.  The feeds now include an email option if you click the  Subscribe in a reader link in the site header.

Post continued after the jump.

These two videos had me laughing for quite a while.

Funny!

Ever heard of a broken Toyota?

But seriously now, the road is no place for fun and games.

Top Gear

This one from Top Gear (a rare serious moment from these guys)

Sad :(

And this touching gem that shows how speeding can have worse consequences than a ticket, loss of license, or property damage.

New EPA ratings prove their accuracy Print E-mail

SS TrailBlazerYesterday I let a couple who normally drive SS TrailBlazers borrow the Prius, they drove 214 miles with an average fuel economy of 44.6 miles per gallon (MPG).  That is just over one MPG less than the revised EPA fuel economy for the Prius, 46 MPG combined city and highway.  More than three times what their vehicles get on the new cycle.  I have spoken out against the new EPA ratings before but this does show how accurate they are for everyday people.  I still say the resources should have spent on a driver education campaign.

If this couple, could get within two MPG what about all the other drivers?  Of course, when I got back in the Prius I reset the gauge and to a trip to the grocery store and back and achieved 71.1 MPG.

Tell me what do you think was the better decision.  Resetting all the fuel economy ratings all the way back to 1985, or teaching America's drivers how to use less fuel, and in the process reducing our need for foreign oil to supplement our domestic supply?   How are you doing in your vehicle in comparison to the new EPA ratings (compare here)?

Thanks to everyone that reported the issue, it has been fixed and now the page will operate normally!  After some rest I will post on what happened and restore the data I have.

To the users that posted on the forums since the 18th your posts have been lost and cannot be recovered.  This forum software is no longer compatible with the content management system and will be removed.  The existing posts will be migrated to the new system.  Or we can have separate logins for the forums.

Please tell me in the comments if you'd rather have an integrated forum or if it's OK to have two separate usernames and passwords?

Voice Commands article updated! Print E-mail
Written by Kacey Green
Friday, 17 August 2007

I have finished writing up the list of all the voice commands that I know, for the Toyota Voice Activated Navigation systems. Not all commands work on every vehicle, this article covers Toyota, Lexus and Scion, vehicles equipped with voice activation but it will also work on some GM voice navigation systems.

You can find the updated article in the knowledge base.

Random thoughts Print E-mail

Just another quick update today:

I parked nose out at Target today; when I returned to the Prius, there was a red Honda Accord hybrid (HAH) parked behind me.  I mention this because I have seen so few HAHs in the wild.  I will explain why I park the way I do in a future article.  I have also found the taller hills here in Columbia make it much easier to achieve and maintain high fuel economy numbers than the really sort height, long length hills in Gainesville.  Today I tried out a new procedure when it comes to the first five minutes of operation after reading a post on Prius Online.  When I tried the technique yesterday, I was less than thrilled, so I modified it a bit and the results were impressive, even though I climbed a monster set of hills during the warm-up.

I also want  to point out that I am not happy with the service I have received while on the SunCom network, there were two incidents in less than a week.  First, they would not let me dial 1800-GOOG-411, and today they did not let me connect to the internet from my T-Mobile Wing to check my bank balance.  I got the message "connection refused by the remote party" without the Edge/GSM connection never being established, for any site I tried.  Although when I roam onto the AT&T network, they provide the level of service that T-Mobile has trained me to expect.
That is all I have for now.
