joined EarthLink in 1996 and oversaw the company's growth from a
regional ISP with 500,000 subscribers to a national service provider
with more than 5 million. He took a medical leave of absence in
November. Atlanta-based EarthLink released no other information on his
death.
"Garry was instrumental in building EarthLink into the company it is
today," company Chairman Robert M. Kavner said in a statement.
EarthLink said Mike Lunsford will remain interim CEO.
Prior to joining EarthLink, Betty served as CEO of Digital
Communications Associates Inc. — and was at the time the youngest CEO
of a company listed on the
New York Stock Exchange.
Betty, a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology, began his
career at IBM Corp., and won the IBM President's Excellence Award in
1982 for his work on the original IBM PC.

GRLT.com hasn't had a computing section in years but we've had computing related content since the site first launched back in April 19th, 2002. With the last revamp (February 2nd, 2006) that G Custom helped us with we never did add back a dedicated computing section. At the request of our viewers we've corrected this oversight. We are also going back and re-categorizing obvious computing articles.

Rumor has it that one of the many things that'll be announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January will be a partnership between the Ford Motor Company and Microsoft to put a Microsoft operating system, known as Sync, into new Fords an option. The software will supposedly provide for hands-free phone calls as well as enable e-mail, music downloads, and other data-related activities.
If this is like any of the Microsoft-Ford prototypes I've seen recently this will be an interesting technology. I'd even have it added to my Prius. The device, Sync reminds me of is a Tablet PC optimized for automotive use that Microsoft and Ford showed a few months ago. The casing of the computer and the desktop were branded by Ford. The only thing I didn't like about the product when I first heard about it was that said product would only be available with new Ford vehicles. The reason that upset me was because the only technical reason given for why the product wouldn't work with older vehicles or vehicles from different brands was because they didn't have mounts for the tablet. Mounts aren't difficult to make I was thinking about going into a Ford parts store and picking one up when the product became available. I'll be sure to let you know if I here more about Sync or the Auto tablet (whatever marketing name it had).

Our resolution this year is to provide many more articles and news than we have in the past few months. We also plan to hold more get-togethers with more lead-time.

We are currently floating plans for a club picnic between one and a half to two months from now. Standby for details, we are open to any suggestions. The location will probably be a park or another open location north of Gainesville.
